then resided in Decorah until her death. Their children are: Helen Theodora Davis (now deceased) lived at Lusk, WY; James Melvin living with his wife Ruth in Cresco, IA; and Mildred Christine Knopf, a widow, lives in Decorah.
Edwin J. was born 27 Nov 1889 in Glenwood Twp. He moved to Madison, Wl after college graduation. He was trained as an engineer and was chief engineer for the Wisconsin Power and Electric Co. before retiring. Edwin married Ethel Pond in Madison in 1915. They had one son, Charles. After the death of Ethel, Edwin married Hazel Kelly Merriman of Madison 3 Oct 1948. Edwin and Hazel died in Ft. Atkinson, Wl. Charles and wife Jane reside in Riverwoods, IL.
Julia Kristin was born 7 Jul 1895 in Glenwood Twp. She died 3 Sep 1895.
Jens was an outgoing man, active in farming, community and church. Torjbor was a quiet, industrious woman. They were members of Pontoppidan Lutheran Church in Glenwood Twp. This church does not exist now. Jens died 6 Jun 1922 and his wife 27 Aug 1936. Both are buried in the Pontoppidan Cemetery.

Kapler, Norbert and Louise (Huber)

Norbert Kapler was born 29 May 1916 on a farm west of Cresco, the son of Adolph and Catherine Ferrie Kapler and educated in the St. Joseph Catholic School. For several years Norbert operated the Farm Bureau Service Station in Cresco. In 1940 he moved to Cedar Rapids, IA and worked at Wilson & Co.
Louise Huber was born 29 Oct 1916 on the Huber farm west of Spillville, IA, the daughter of George C. and Rose (Klimesh) Huber. She attended St. Wenceslaus Catholic Grade School and graduated from Decorah High School in May 1935. She received her training in elementary education at Luther College and Upper Iowa University, graduating from the latter. She also did post graduate work at the University of Northern Iowa, Winona State College and at the University of Iowa. All of her college education was earned while teaching, by going to night school and attending summer classes. In 1935 she started her teaching career in a rural school in Sumner Twp. The winter of 1935-36 was one to remember with its huge amount of snow, blizzards and cold weather. After her rural school experiences, she taught in the Ft. Atkinson Public School and from 1960 until her retirement in 1981, she taught in the Turkey Valley Community School. She enjoyed 43 years of teaching.
Norbert and Louise Kapler
Norbert and Louise were married 1 Jun 1942 by Rev. John Chihak in the St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. They lived in Cedar Rapids until Norbert entered the U.S. Army in March 1943. He took his basic training in Camp Polk, LA with the 8th Armored Division. He then attended radio operation training at Ft. Knox, KY In Nov 1944 his overseas tour of duty started in Southampton, England.
On the mainland his division landed in France, then moved through Belgium, Holland, Germany, Czechoslovakia and Austria. While overseas he earned the rank of technical sergeant. After his discharge in Feb 1946, he started farming with his father-in-law, George C. Huber. Norbert retired in 1981, but he and Louise continued living on the Huber farm which they purchased in 1961.
Norbert and Louise have one daughter, Lori. Lori and her husband, Roger Shatek, and their four children, Leah, Neil, Katie and Paul, live on and work the Kapler's farm. This farm has been in the family for five generations. Michael Huber and Ursula Schreiber originally came from Switzerland and first settled in Indiana. On 15 Jun 1855 they purchased this land in Sumner Twp, Sec. 22 from the Dept, of Interior. The patent and the Seal of the General Land Office was signed by President Franklin Pierce.
The second generation on this farm was one of Michael’s sons, John Huber (1837-1915) and Magdalena
